Typhoon update

CNN just said this is the strongest typhoon of the year so far for Asia. Kevin says that by 6 we'll know if we have to work tomorrow or not. Since that announcement is usually made at 10 pm, I'm assuming that means no work tomorrow.

Kevin's thinking about having a Mah-jong party later this afternoon to help pass the typhoon time and maybe we'll make some play-doh.

Typhoon afternoon

This is how the boys are spending their typhoon afternoon: watching tennis and eating cookies!
Since tomorrow is supposed to be moon festival (an evening reserved for cooking out and admiring the moon, based on the lunar calendar) we might do an indoor barbeque tonight in our oven. We'll see what the BBQ king comes up with!

Typhoon Sinlaku

No hiking this weekend. Instead we're hanging out inside and staying dry. Typhoon Sinlaku is a slow moving super typoon that is supposed to clip the NE tip of Taiwan sometime tomorrow (Sunday) morning. They're predicting 7 inches of rain in 24 hours and wind speeds of about 115mph. How does that compare with the big storms which plaque the US gulf coast, like Ike?

So, we're spending the day at home. Keanu and I made cookies this morning and they're delicious even though we didn't have any brown sugar (I forgot to bring some back from America this summer and I haven't gotten around to picking any up at the import stores yet).

After we were done mixing up the dough, I gave Keanu a couple of chocolate chips to eat. He didn't really like eating them, but they sure were fun to play with! I wonder what we should do after nap time?

Typhoon Day!

Remember snow days when school was cancelled? Well, imagine a snow day on the first day of school! That's what we have except its wind and rain instead of snow. Yep, tomorrow is supposed to be our first day of school, but it's been cancelled due to the upcoming typhoon. It doesn't look like it'll be too bad in Taipei (it'll make landfall quite a ways southeast of here and then cross the mountains), but still it's strong enough to cancel all work and school in Taipei city. Summer's just around the corner

Alright, the countdown is on. I've got a day and a half left of school. I turned in all of my grades last Friday, so all that needs to happen in the next day and a half is monitoring students taking tests for other classes. Then, Friday morning it's off to the airport, if all goes well weatherwise.

Last Friday they predicted a typhoon to come up from the Philippines on Monday and Tuesday of this week. As the weekend progressed, the typhoon slowed down and the path moved farther and farther west, making us think that it might swing around and hit Taipei instead of Kaohsiung and losing strength before reaching Taipei. So far we've had hot, humid days and sunny skies, so I'm hoping that means it's moved even farther west and will go to China instead.
